LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - WAFER Food Pantry is doing what they can to continue to help families put food on the table. They did so Wednesday by handing out an extra package of frozen meats weighing in a total of 30 pounds.
La Crosse Police had to help assist with traffic on Causeway Blvd. because of the long car line of patrons.
Mark, one of WAFER's volunteers, said he decided to help pass out the food because he knows how hard the pandemic has been for families and wanted to do anything he could to help those in need.
"Judging by how many families we serve, it is obvious that there is a need because there are so many families that we do service," said Mark.
Carretha Yeager, a La Crosse resident, said she is thankful for Mark and everyone at WAFER because they help so many families in the community.
"I appreciate the fact that WAFER helps people in need with food," Yeager said. "WAFER is a great cause because I've heard that they help out families with younger children with food, to help them get by."
Volunteers helped pass out food no-contact style inside people's vehicles.
Over 7,000 pounds of meat was given to patrons on Wednesday. The protein package was just for that day, but WAFER is offering two complete food packages per month through May 2021. Those packages include dairy, bread, fresh produce, and meat products.
