Company expands dog food recall because of salmonella, listeria contamination - PennLive

A New Jersey company has expanded its recall of frozen, raw dog food and bones to all of its products after samples tested positive for salmonella and listeria.

Bravo Packing has recalled its frozen, raw dog food and bones in all sizes.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, samples the agency collected “tested positive for salmonella and listeria monocytogenes and resulted in a recall due to the potential health risks to humans and pets. Bravo Packing, Inc. is expanding the recall due to potential cross contamination.”

According to the FDA, salmonella can be transmitted to humans who handled the dog food if they did not “thoroughly wash their hands” after coming in contact with it.

A human with a salmonella infection may have nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

“Rarely, salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis (an infection of the heart muscle), arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms,” the FDA said.

An animal with a salmonella infection, the FDA said, “may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain.”

Animals can shed salmonella through their feces and saliva, which could spread the infection in the home or to other animals.

According to the FDA, “Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”

The company had issued a partial recall earlier this month of its Performance Dog and Ground Beef foods sold in plastic sleeves.

Bravo Packing provides the dog food to distributors who fill orders at retail stores and direct to consumers nationwide.

The expanded recall includes:

  • Performance Dog, 2-pound chub
  • Performance Dog, 5-pound chub

  • Green Tripe, 5-pound chub
