Vermont Business Magazine The Fanny Allen Foundation has awarded $10,000 to CVOEO to support the organization’s food shelves serving Addison, Franklin and Grand Isle counties. These funds will be used to support the efforts of Addison Community Action Food Shelf and NorthWest Family Foods to improve food access and support advocacy and educational efforts.
NorthWest Family Foods (with one main site in St. Albans, three satellite sites in Franklin and Grand Isle Counties, and Food Shelf on Wheels in Grand Isle County) and Addison Community Action Food Shelf respectively serve approximately 6,000 and 1,000 households annually.
Approximately 4,450 families are food insecure in Franklin County, 590 in Grand Isle County, and 3,500 in Addison County. Furthermore, according to a University of Vermont survey, food insecurity across Vermont is on the rise, and has increased by 33 percent during the pandemic, partially because many families have struggled with loss of employment or reduced work hours due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the Vermont economy is beginning to recover, many families will suffer the effects of long-term job losses for many months, even years, and more will turn to the food shelves.
Paul Dragon, Executive Director says, “Food access is a critical component of a person’s physical and mental health. Healthy, on demand, culturally appropriate food fights hunger and relieves the anxiety that often comes with food insecurity. We are so grateful to Fanny Allen for this gift and their partnership.”
