Runner-up: Starland Cafe Best Sandwich Shop Zunzi’s Zunzi’s is a South African inspired restaurant with a menu influenced by the rich South African, Swiss, Italian, and Dutch heritage of their founders, Johnny and Gabriella Debeer. If you live in Savannah and haven’t eaten at Zunzi’s by now, you are well behind the times (and you need to catch up). When it comes to food, Zunzi’s is one of those spots that put Savannah on the map. The Conquistador conquered the culinary sector and has even been named the best sandwich by People Magazine. In yet another race, Connect Savannah’s Best Sandwich Shop, Zunzi’s swept the competition under the rug—deservedly so. Owner Chris Smith is thrilled to once again be recognized. “Anytime we are in the running for a ‘Best of’ award, the first thing that comes to mind is ‘SHIT YEAH!’ Our team works incredible hard, and they deserve every accolade they get!” For the select few that overlooked such a corner stone of the Low Country, please allow me to pique your appetite. Please also allow me to warn you that you will need a rather large one if you plan on dining at Zunzi’s; The Conquistador is aptly named for its vanquishing of voraciousness. Sitting between two blimp-sized slices of French bread is the restaurant’s signature South African chicken, crisp lettuce, provolone and parmesan. The sandwich sounds simple enough, but everyone knows the magic lies in a heavy dosing of the special Zunzi’s Sauce and Zuni’s Dressing. Because sometimes a change in pace is needed, my most recent favorite is the Spread and Pita plate. For the plate you can select up to four different dips, Curry Chicken Salad, Hummus, Avocado, or Ziki, to eat with a heaping of warm tender pita bread, spicy red onion, earthy sliced tomato, and refreshing cucumber. The glorious thing about this version of Zunzi’s classic offerings is that you get it all on one generous plate. A dip here with pita, or a smear there with cucumber and your senses are taken on a roller-coaster of redolence. For those who have eaten Zunzi’s enough times to be considered a regular, the idea of trying Zunzi’s as a new iteration is mind-blowing. According to Smith, “Zunzi’s is entering a new chapter. … Later this month we will be moving to 236 Drayton St. and opening Zunzibar right next door. Now you will be able to get your favorite Zunzi’s sandwich while you sip on a beach beer, frozen daiquiri or cocktail.” Runner-up: The Black Rabbit Best Seafood Market Russo’s Seafood Just one bite and you’ll know that there is a difference at Russo’s, a family business proudly serving the highest quality seafood in Savannah since 1946. Runner-up: Zunzi’s Best Thai Restaurant Chiriya’s Thai Cuisine Chiriya’s is serving up award-winning Thai food with a distinct Hawaiian flair. Featured on p.22. Best Thai Restaurant Chiriya’s Thai Cuisine Anyone who has had the pleasure of dining at Chiryia’s on Victory Dr. knows the experience there isn’t just all about the food. Sure, there are incredible Thai-fusion dishes that are famous in Savannah: drunken noodles, pad thai, the dreamy coconut infused curries — the list goes on and on. But, everyone knows the soul of the restaurant comes from the hands and heart that make the place run: Chiryia Moore. The restaurant’s namesake isn’t hard to find. If Chiryia’s is open, Moore is in the kitchen — not-so-large, but definitely in charge. She makes every order fresh, and by hand, using recipes passed down from generations. And if you’re lucky enough to be there when she finds a few minutes to spare, you’ll get to meet her and that infectious - and hilarious - personality that fills the room with joy and positivity. Moore grew up in Thailand, but moved with family to Hawaii in 1977. She started taking English classes at a local university, where she met her future husband, who just happened to be her professor. It wasn’t long before she started her first restaurant job — at McDonald’s. “I did so well, they wanted to promote me,” Moore said. “But, a friend of mine said to me ‘Hey there’s a cooking school here that’s free, you want to come?’ So, I quit and went to cooking school. I graduated from that with top of the class.” She was offered a position at a restaurant at a resort where she learned the restaurant industry from the inside out, and knew it was where she was meant to be. “I said ‘Wow, this is what I like.’ It’s what really relaxes me, you know? I was so good, I was making lots of money. I had a Louis Vuitton back then, you know?” She found her way from Hawaii to the mainland, and eventually settled with her husband and family in Savannah. The first iteration of Chiryia’s opened on the Southside in 2007. The current location on Victory Dr. opened in 2014 and the business has grown exponentially in just under a decade there. Her food is a mix of her heritage: a Chinese father and Thai mother. She learned the secrets of family cuisine from her sister, who you may often find in the kitchen alongside her. “My food is influenced both ways,” Moore said. I always combine those two styles together, and that’s what makes my food unique. I break all the rules; everything I do. You have to test the balance of things, with food and in life. Bitter, salty, sweet, sour and spicy. To me, if you get those things down and balance it out, you can break any rule. My cooking is for the eyes first, then the smell, then the taste. It’s a whole experience that I love to share!” Runner-up: King and I Best Tybee Restaurant: The Crab Shack Also voted Best Seafood and Best Outdoor Dining, this place is always hopping, and for good reason.
