Harold’s Chicken and Walnut Room’s Pot Pies Headline Sundays on State’s Food - Eater Chicago

Organizers have released information on the restaurants involved in Sundays on State, the city’s plan to pedestrianize the famous downtown drag. It’s a tight lineup featuring a food truck from Harold’s Chicken and the Walnut Room’s famous chicken pot pie.

The Walnut Room, the famous restaurant inside Macy’s State Street (nee Marshall Field’s), will also provide alcoholic beverages; management there has been trying to lure more happy hour customers to the space for years.

Other vendors include:

• Adams Street Brewery (they’re the brewery from the iconic Berghoff and will sell beer and root beer).
• Globowl (Described as “an interactive dance party that blends music, food, and fun while celebrating multiculturalism.”)
• Thrd.coffee company (a mobile coffee bar based in Humboldt Park)

Sundays on State is supported by the Chicago Loop Alliance and will take place from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the following eight dates:

• July 25
• August 8
• August 22
• August 29
• September 5
• September 12

— A fundraiser for Austin Market — an outdoor market that sells affordable produce and other items for community members of the West Side neighborhood — netted more than $660,000, according to the Tribune. A group of teens created the market last year in the wake of George Floyd’s murder to give the mostly Black neighborhood an options in the middle of a food desert, reports Block Club Chicago. Danny Parkins, a sports radio host on the Score 670 AM, raised the money part of a 24-hour radiothon that aired from Wednesday, June 23 to Thursday, June 24. The money hopes to establish a permanent home for the market.

— Chicago-based Plate magazine has a new lead editor. After 15 years building the brand, Chandra Ram is slipping into an editor at large role, one that will allow her to pursue other projects. Plate has promoted longtime manager editor Liz Grossman as managing editor. Grossman spent 13 years in her previous role.

— In other local food media news, Amy Carr has left the Tribune, one of a large group to leave the paper after New York-based hedge fund, Alden Global Capital, took control. Carr, an editor who also oversaw parts of the Trib’s food coverage, has a new job: she’s the new editor of Chicago magazine, which is also owned by Alden. Chicago has brought back Anthony Todd’s weekly food column, but there have been concerns raised about Chicago’s approach to racial inclusion, and will be curious if Carr addresses them after former editor Susanna Homan’s exit. Homan has moved on as CEO of Paws Chicago.

— Taste of Greektown will return this summer from Friday August 27 to Sunday, August 29. The festival, which features music and Greek food, is in its 31st year, according to a news release, and goes along Halsted Street from Adams to Van Buren. Organizers will release details on food vendors later this year.

— Chalet, an upcoming ski resort-inspired restaurant pegged for the former Farmhouse space, 228 W. Chicago Avenue, in River North, has named a chef. Louie Yu (Sunda) was named Chalet’s executive chef, according to a news release.
