Inside Scoop: Ben & Jerry’s non-dairy Phish Food is impressive - MassLive.com

I recently saw that Ben & Jerry’s has added Phish Food to their line of non-dairy frozen dessert offerings. I was ecstatic at the news because I absolutely love the original Phish Food ice cream. So many years and so many flavors tasted since I started reviewing ice cream and this is still in my top three ice cream flavors.

The original Phish Food consists of creamy chocolate ice cream, gobs of marshmallow, a caramel swirl and fudge shaped like fish. This ice cream flavor is a sweet delight.

The non-dairy version offers us the same flavors and mix-ins, but with vegan friendly ingredients.

When I first opened the container I was met with the same chaotic mix of ingredients as in the original. This pint also has gobs of marshmallows, a thick caramel swirl and plenty of fudgy fish all in a chocolate base.

I can honestly say the makers did a great job with the mix-ins. All of them taste essentially the same as the original.

My only issue was the “ice cream” and that’s just because I don’t really like non-dairy desserts, not because the brand did a bad job.

The texture of the frozen dessert is actually pretty nice. It’s not as thick or creamy as the original but it doesn’t melt too fast and has a nice consistency. The flavor is where I struggled. I can’t really explain it, but when any sort of nut or seed milk is used as the base for a dessert I always get this unpleasant aftertaste.

I’m still giving this one four scoops because it’s a close enough approximation of the delectable original and if you’ve been vegan or dairy-free for any period of time your palate has probably adjusted to any aftertaste and you might really enjoy this.

A reminder that just because it’s vegan, doesn’t mean it’s healthy. A serving of this treat is 330 calories and has 14 grams of fat, 80 milligrams of sodium and 34 grams of sugar.
