Bloomington (Heart of Illinois ABC)- Local Heartland Community College students visit Sunnydale Community Garden & Food Forest to discuss the benefits of Regenerative Agriculture.
Sunnydale Community Garden has been serving the community for the past six years by providing organic produce.
By partnering with local organizations like Home Sweet Mission and Beacon of Hope food pantry locals have access to healthy options.
" The biggest issue that we've seen especially with COVID is that a lot of underserved communities. We do have food banks; we do have food drop off's sites. Part of my research has shown people are not calorie deficient as much as they are nutrition deficient" says Dr. Caleb Phillips, President and Farm manager of Sunnydale Community Garden.
The food garden not only offers organic produce to the community, but offers the opportunity for local teens to work and learn. " We're able to offer jobs to teens in our community so they can begin to understand small scale farming and various trades in our community"says Phillips.
The students currently studying Regenerative Agriculture at Heartland Community college are eager to learn more about contributing to a solution for those suffering from food insecurities.
"Not only produce good nutritious vegetables and fruits but, also at the same time give back to the land. Improve the soil so it can continue to give us that wonderful end product. for us" says Ariana McCann a current student.
The food garden hopes to expand while teaching individuals who will likely be a part of the next generation bridging the gap between calories and nutrition.
