School cafeterias experiencing shortages in their normal food deliveries are looking for more suppliers and, in some cases, relying on trips to local grocery stores to make sure they have enough food for their students.
Students often rely on schools for their midday meal, but schools are receiving less food than normal, forcing them to change menus, provide different options or look for supplies elsewhere.
Meredosia-Chambersburg Superintendent Thad Walker said things aren’t bad in his district yet, but he is worried things could get bad if they don’t start looking for supplemental suppliers now.
“For us, chicken purchases are harder to come by from our suppliers, so we are looking at different vendors to get what we need,” Walker said. “The stock just isn’t there; there is no definite reason that I know of.”
Walker said he has friends in the restaurant industry who are facing the same issues, so he is working with his schools to ensure they are conservative and can guarantee each student a warm meal daily.
With a smaller high school group, the district provides alternatives for its high school students when there isn’t enough of a schedule meal to go around, Walker said.
“We aren’t as large as other districts, like Jacksonville, so we can make these changes a little easier,” he said. “We have a nice supply on hand and we are trying to get ahead of the curve and see what options we have.”
The district isn’t in a bad place and is small enough that Walker hopes not to get there, he said.
“We aren’t pulling out the bologna yet,” Walker said.
Shortages in the Triopia district have meant trips to the local grocery store, Superintendent Adam Dean said.
“We had someone run out to Walmart to get tortilla chips because we didn’t have enough to serve chicken nachos,” he said.
The school’s supplier is seeing a shortage, too, Dean said.
“We rely on a supplier that has some supply issues and it is causing some problems here,” he said. “We have been able to feed our kids every day, obviously, but we are trying to work this out.”
