
HATFIELD — Stop & Shop has donated $12,500 in gift cards to the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. The gift cards will be used to provide local families with a Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings.
“The Food Bank is very grateful to Stop & Shop for its continued commitment to feeding our neighbors in need of food assistance during these difficult times. Stop & Shop has been a stalwart supporter of our mission for decades,” food bank executive director Andrew Morehouse said in a statement.
Additionally, Stop & Shop will donate up to 21,500 turkeys turkeys to 25 hunger relief and community partners across five states to aide in putting Thanksgiving meals on tables. This year the company said it donated 340,000 pounds of turkey in efforts to fight food insecurity.
The American Farm Bureau estimates a Thanksgiving feast for 10, complete with sweet potatoes, rolls, a vegetable tray and a pie with whipped cream, will cost $53.31 this year, up 14% from a year ago. It’s an unusual spike. Before this year, the annual cost estimate had been falling since 2015.
