PEORIA (HOI) -- Officials say food left on the stove is the cause of a house fire that killed three pets and caused tens of thousands of dollars in damages.
Around 11:20 p.m. Saturday night, crews responded to the 1300 block of North Underhill Street for a report of a house fire.
Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke coming from the back of the house.
A fire in the back blocked entry to the house, and once crews could work past it, they began battling fires on the first and second floors of the home.
Officials say no residents were injured, but three pets were found dead after a search of the home. Following an investigation, it was determined that food left on the stove was what caused the fire.
Battalion chief Clint Kuhlman said it was a very labor-intensive effort, requiring multiple companies to assist.
Officials say the fire caused around $90,000 in damages.
