SAN FRANCISCO — Food service workers at Oracle Park voted to strike Saturday, citing stalled negotiations over COVID-19 safety, health care coverage and hazard pay between UNITE HERE Local 2 and Bon Appetit, the Giants’ food service contractor.

A Local 2 press release said 96.7% of active stadium workers voted to strike and that approximately 86% of workers attended the vote.

The yes vote means a strike could be called at any time, so it’s possible food service workers will walk out of Oracle Park during the Giants’ matchup against the Dodgers on Saturday or during Sunday’s series finale between the rivals.

“Bon Appetit and the Giants’ approach to workers and fans’ safety during this latest surge of COVID-19 is completely inadequate and dangerously irresponsible,” Local 2 president Anand Singh said in a press release. “Our members have carried on through this pandemic without fair compensation and security in our health insurance while the Giants have continued to reap profits.”

Local 2 says at least 20 concessions workers have been infected with COVID-19 since the stadium reopened, but it is not clear whether the workers believe they became infected at the ballpark.

One of the primary issues food service workers face on a daily basis is dealing with unmasked fans at concourse concessions and in private suites. While the city of San Francisco requires masks to be worn indoors regardless of a person’s vaccination status, compliance isn’t close to 100% along the concourses inside Oracle Park.

“Last night I must’ve told 200 people to put a mask on, and it’s stressful because a lot of them just make fun of you and give you attitude,” Deborah Torrano, a suite attendant, said in the press release. “I’ve worked at Oracle Park for 22 years and at Candlestick for 10 before that. We deserve better after all these years.”

Eligibility for food service workers to receive health care benefits is currently set at ten events per month, but in some months this year, the Giants have not played 10 home games. As part of their negotiations, workers are asking Bon Appetit to lower the eligibility threshold to nine events per month.

Workers are also demanding $3 of hazard pay per hour, which they believe is warranted due to conditions they view as unsafe.

The Giants declined to comment on the strike vote.
