UPPER MERION — GVF has announced that 2,300 pounds of food were collected during its 10th annual Food Drive — surpassing the goal for this year’s drive. Since the event was first launched, 15,300 pounds of food have been collected.
All food donations went to Philabundance, a non-profit that provides nearly 90,000 people in the region with food each week, across Pennsylvania and New Jersey communities. In 2020, the organization distributed more than 55 million pounds of food to those facing food insecurity.
GVF is a Montgomery County-based not-for-profit organization focused on reducing single-occupancy vehicles and promoting alternatives like biking, transit, walking, working from home, carpooling and, vanpooling.
The drive was held from Nov. 1 through Dec. 13, with the support of GVF’s partners RK&K, McMahon Associates, and Suburban Transit Network, known as TransNet.
“I am continuously amazed at the generosity of our partners and the local business community,” Rob Henry, executive director, GVF, said in a statement.
During the food drive, people were asked to physically drop off donations at four sites in Montgomery and Chester counties, including GVF and its partners, according to Stacey Weiss, TDM manager for GVF. They could also choose to send donations via Amazon to GVF’s Upper Merion office.
The goal for this year’s drive was to collect 2,000 pounds of food, according to Weiss. The year with the highest total collected — 3,000 pounds — was 2019.
“As important as it is for people to have access to reliable transportation, it is imperative that people have better access to food,” Henry said. “Through the efforts of Philabundance in helping to end hunger throughout our region, we are thankful to have our partners collaborating with us on this important program. We are stronger when we are working together.”
McMahon, RK&K and TransNet have partnered with GVF on the initiative for several years, according to Weiss.
“As this pandemic continues to bring hardships to so many people and families, we hope our food drive helped to alleviate some stress to those who are struggling during these difficult times,” she said in an emailed response to questions.
GVF has already scheduled the dates for its 11th annual Food Drive — Nov. 7 through Dec. 12, 2022.
GVF’s mission is to inspire mobility choices. With more than 30 years of experience, GVF partners with public and private organizations to maximize awareness and develop support. For more information about GVF visit www.gvftma.com.
