Published 5:08 am Saturday, October 1, 2022

The 127th annual Jeff Davis Parish Fair will run Oct. 4-8 with fun for the whole family including carnival rides, games, food booths, exhibits, livestock shows and more.

Jeff Davis Parish Fair Board Vice President Kori Myers expects this year’s event to be as popular as always.

“The big draw has traditionally been the carnival rides, games and good food,” Myers said. “People love to come out and enjoy a good time.”

New to the fair this year will be a $2 per person admission, 5-11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Children under 4 accompanied by an adult will be admitted free.

The admission will help the Fair Board cover the cost of security, Myers said.

“As a Fair Board we are working together to continue to put the fair on for our community and keep the event family oriented,” she said. “We want families to continue to come out and enjoy the fair but with that comes the need for more security.”

Myers said among the favorites at the fair each year are the local food booths offering barbecue burgers, pork steaks, red beans and rice, fettuccine, hot dogs, funnel cakes, onion blossoms, french fries, hot dogs, fried oreos and more.

“You can find anything you want to eat,” she said.

The fairgrounds office will be open 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday for entries to be made, School booths will also be set up during that time.

Participants from junior to adult divisions throughout the parish will compete for awards in various categories including photography, agriculture, arts and crafts, cooking, sewing and more.

Locals will also have a chance to showcase their talents and help kick off the fair during the annual talent show at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the fairgrounds arena.

The carnival midway will be open Wednesday-Thursday featuring carnival rides and games by the Mighty Thomas Carnival.

Judging of agricultural and homemaking exhibits will be held at 9 a.m.

on Thursday.

Festivities will continue with the queen’s pageant at 7 p.m. Thursday at the fairgrounds.  The winner of the pageant and her court will be featured in the fair parade on Friday.

Schools will be closed Friday, and students will be allowed to attend the fair parade followed by School Day at the fair. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. on Main Street in Jennings.

Judging of swine and dairy, sheep and goats, beef, rabbits and poultry will begin at noon Friday.

The fair concludes at 11 p.m. on Saturday.

The annual fair is managed by the Jeff Davis Parish Fair Board, which is made up of more than 30 volunteers from throughout the parish, who give of their time and talents for free to put on the fair for the community, Myers said.

“In return the Fair Board helps the community by improving the fairgrounds and giving back to the community,” she said.
